How the Technology in Turbine Flowmeters Work?

They maintain measurement accuracy and mechanical integrity in the corrosive and abrasive fluids commonly employed in oil and gas production and many other industries.

Fluid entering the turbine flowmeters first passes through an inlet flow straightened which reduces its turbulent flow pattern. It then passes through the meter body, causing the turbine rotor to rotate at a speed proportional to fluid velocity. As each turbine blade passes through the magnetic field generated by the meter’s magnetic pickup, an alternating current voltage pulse is generated. The pulses provide an output frequency that is proportional to volumetric flow.

One turbine flowmeter features a 316 stainless steel housing and rotor support, and abrasion-resistant tungsten carbide rotor shaft and journal bearings. These materials help the meter to maintain accuracy and mechanical integrity when measuring harsh and abrasive fluids.

The turbine flowmeter can be coupled with an electronic flow monitor to provide multiple local read and system integration options. The monitor presents flow rates and totals simultaneously via an LCD display and/or transmitted to a user interface via Modbus RTU, 4 to 20mA analog outputs or totalizing pulse output.

Disposal Wells: Produced water from wells goes into the pit or is stored in tanks on-site from where it is piped or trucked to the disposal well site, stored in a tank and injected underground for permanent storage using high-pressure pumps. Final disposal must be in accordance with environmental regulations. Turbine flowmeters often measure produced water.

Hydraulic Fracturing: Oil field fracturing requires accurate and durable turbine flowmeter measurements to monitor several processes during a treatment. Metering of used and reclaimed water is a primary application for turbine flowmeters. They can be used to monitor the water as well as the chemicals used to treat the water.

Natural Gas Pipelines: Turbine flowmeters work in a variety of pipeline installations including those for metering stations, chemical injection and offloading to smaller pipelines for delivery or truck loading stations.
